In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, GDAS integrated Breaking Free Online into its services in 2021. Initially, staff received comprehensive training to recommend this tool to clients, leading to a promising uptake. However, by mid-2022, an increase in referrals strained keyworkers’ caseloads. To address this, we revamped our strategy by training administrative staff to register clients for Breaking Free Online, primarily recommending it to those with low-level drug use. Clients retained the option to switch to a keyworker if needed.

We promoted registration through our website, social media, and printed materials. Breaking Free was offered alongside keyworker sessions and while clients awaited their initial appointments. This strategy alleviated staff workload and led to a steady increase in sign-ups, totaling 365 with a 100% retention rate. The data shows a monthly decrease in substance use and improved mental health among users, highlighting the tool’s significant impact on our service delivery.

AI for Adult Social Care

Programme Director

Logo

Disseminating good information and advice to help people navigate adult social care (ASC) is a challenge for every local authority. AI offers a unique opportunity to proactively support service users, carers, family members and advocates. This emerging technology has huge potential, but with it comes a high degree of risk due to the personal nature of ASC services, as such it needs to be deployed safely and securely.

The work we have been progressing allows councils to design, build, test and deploy AI to understand and evaluate the impact it could have on ASC services. By working collaboratively, the project is able to share learning, build systems at pace (to keep up with evolving AI world), and support councils to deliver this critical information in more useful, accessible ways. Service users (et al) can ask their questions, in their language, on their preferred channels, 24/7 - and get trusted responses.

Seabed and coastline management

Communication and Engagement management

Logo

As the manager of the seabed and much of the coastline around England, Wales and Northern Ireland, TCE plays a key role in enabling green energy, driving economic growth and jobs, and creating and protecting thriving biodiversity and marine environments. This includes development of the UK’s world-leading offshore wind industry, supporting the target to supply all the UK’s electricity from renewable sources by 2035.
With many competing demands for seabed space, including ports, shipping, cables, pipelines, CO2 storage, and renewable energy sources, TCE drives a co-ordinated approach to its management with its Whole of Seabed Programme, which sees a careful balance between protecting the marine environment and the rich biodiversity of the seas, whilst also helping facilitate the growth of sustainable industry sectors and the economies of local communities.
To meet these challenges, TCE is utilising digital solutions (RIO), and an innovative data science led approach.

The platform has been developed based on the principles of Informed’s AI Charter. This charter sets out principles for the use, integration and delivery of AI solutions in a manner which is ethical, safe, and responsible. Delivering our ambitious transformation programme and continuing to provide best in class services requires the right digital skills and capability. Since 2018 we’ve been using our innovative talent pipeline programmes to grow our own.

While some areas are now established; only requiring iteration such as Software Engineering, others we’ve built as required such as Cloud and SDET. Having used 3rd party support to train and mentor previously, that investment created the opportunity to redesign, deliver and mentor the 2023 Academy cohort in-house.

This programme combines professional training with hands-on experience, creating careers in Cloud Engineering or Software Development Engineering in Test. Our innovative design approach sees the involvement of previous students, now graduates, and Senior Engineers. Designing, creating, and delivering training, mentoring, alongside virtual labs and hands-on learning for students in our new in-house bootcamp.

Spacehive Fundraising Platform

Partnerships Manager

Logo

Spacehive is a community fundraising platform that empowers local people to lead local transformation. We are firm believers in the ingenuity of communities to respond to challenges in local areas with innovative solutions but for reasons such as lack of funding, experience or confidence, they can be locked out of that process before they’ve even begun. By shifting the traditional top-down approach of public service delivery, that often misses the nuanced needs of local communities, to a bottom-up model, we dismantle common barriers through access to resources and diverse funding streams.

We believe that those who experience their local challenges firsthand are best positioned to devise creative solutions. As a result, the ideas posted on Spacehive always reflect the issues the country is facing - the cost of living, post Covid recovery and now, most prominently, climate change. Our platform is continuously developed to help communities address their needs, enabling cutting edge ideas to be made possible. In doing so, Spacehive fosters a collaborative ecosystem where residents, businesses and local authorities co-create solutions. This reimagined approach to public service delivery ensures that local places, spaces and activities are shaped by communities.

Cabinet Office: Find a grant

Marketing Lead

Logo

Until recently, it wasn’t easy to apply for government grants. As an applicant, you’d have to search multiple sites and different government departments to find opportunities.

Yet often, the organisations and individuals most in need of grant funding are the ones most lacking the time and resources to search for them. The Cabinet Office (TCO) asked AND Digital to help make it simpler, faster and fairer to find government funding.

- A Discovery phase involving 60+ users helped us crystallise our ideas around the following elements:
- Creating a first-of-its-kind, one-stop-shop bringing all government grants together under one search tool
- Creating a national service that would be easy to use and meet the needs of users from government bodies to farmers to scientific researchers
- Enabling proactivity, so once search criteria are established, the system contacts applicants, so they don’t miss out
- Ensuring interoperability between myriad different government systems

Fotenix’s idea is to empower farmers with advanced technology that helps them grow better crops with fewer resources. They use special cameras that can “see” things the human eye can’t, like early signs of disease or drought in crops. This technology allows farmers to spot problems quickly, so they can take action before it’s too late.

By giving farmers this kind of early warning system, Fotenix helps them use less water, reduce the need for chemicals, and make smarter decisions about how to care for their crops. This not only saves money but also leads to healthier, more resilient crops. Fotenix’s goal is to make farming more efficient and sustainable, helping farmers produce more food with less impact on the environment. In short, Fotenix is all about giving farmers the tools they need to succeed in a changing world.

The NSTA is committed to creating value through digital innovation. To achieve this, The NDR was originally developed and held by a third-party organisation as an on-premises solution with 1GB download limits and little data validation. This was problematic as the data was not within our control and resulted in vendor lock-in, breaching Government standards.

To resolve this, the service was brought in-house by transferring the data into an Azure cloud solution with a new front end designed with our partner, Osokey. In future, should we decide to switch vendors, we can replace the front end and retain rights and access to the data.

We have also readied the NDR to accommodate new data to satisfy our roles in carbon capture & storage and hydrogen.

Pre-Court Disposals

- 90% of crime is committed by people that have a conviction.
- Adults released from custodial sentences of less than 12 months have a proven reoffending rate of 55.3%.

The current approach to criminal justice and rehabilitation isn't working. Court Backlogs are at record levels, trust in Policing is at an all-time-low and prisons are overwhelmed. Since 2020, Make Time Count have been working with several Police Forces on an alternative, digitally enabled platform to avoid the revolving door of the Criminal Justice System. We want to reduce reoffending and make a difference to those impacted by the system.

We've used evidenced based research to build a tech ecosystem that enables officers to understand criminogenic needs of users and link to local service providers, all managed in one platform.

Data Skills Gateway

Project Director

Logo

The Data Skills Gateway was conceived to develop a strategic approach to increasing the data skills of the population of the city region, regardless of background, gender or location. This was in recognition of significant skill shortages in a key growth sector in our city region and underrepresentation in the tech sector more generally.
We have developed an innovative approach to upskilling, working in schools, local colleges, universities and with other training providers to create content and delivery approaches that are inclusive and flexible. By partnering with relevant third sector organisations we have also been able to provide targeted support to learners which has delivered improved outcomes for participants. The focus has included significant resources directed at upskilling teachers and college lecturers to ensure sustainability of the project and the mainstreaming of activity in future years. The approach has generated significant interest and receipt of a number of accolades.

TellJO

Marketing Manager

Logo

TellJO uses technology to improve wellbeing and prevent crisis situations, like debt and homelessness.
We work with organisations to proactively offer their customers a digital wellbeing check, a series of mainly yes/no questions to understand a user’s wellbeing level. It generates personalised signposts, for financial, physical or mental health support.

In some cases, we help customers who have arrears. We believe the way arrears are currently pursued causes harm and pushes people further into debt. Instead, we help understand reasons for non-payment to save customer stress and reduce the risk of enforcement by 33%.

User feedback “If I hadn’t had the link for TellJO, then my home was actually at risk, don’t really know where I would be right now.” After completing a wellbeing check, users feel on average 8.6 out of 10 better.

GreenTech Gathering

Digital Director

Logo

Our route into GreenTech & Sustainability was the development of our own ‘Website Sustainability Auditing’ tool. The purpose of the tool is to help companies understand the estimated amount of carbon their websites and digital services emit per page request. There’s a common misconception that as websites are hosted in the ‘cloud’ there isn't much impact.

Unfortunately, this is not the case.

The IT and Communications industry as a whole creates more greenhouse gas emissions than the aviation industry every single year. This is the problem our idea is aiming to solve.

Off the back of developing our ‘Website Sustainability Auditing’ tool, we also started GreenTech Gathering - A relaxed and informal networking event series for individuals and organisations interested in sustainability to connect in person and expand their networking in the North. Each event receives 70 - 120 business professionals all focused on making the world a better place through their businesses.
